Anthropic is quietly testing Claude Money, a new personal finance feature for its AI assistant. The tool would let people link their bank accounts and ask Claude questions about spending, budgets, and future plans. That raises real privacy concerns, because a chatbot would get a live view of your transactions.
What Claude Money Appears to Do
The feature shows up as a new Money section inside the Claude app for iOS. It sits next to familiar tabs such as Chats, Code, Artifacts, Dispatch, and Cowork. A setup screen asks users to connect their bank accounts and ask Claude about spending, plans, and other money topics.
The “Get started” button suggests the account linking flow already exists in some form. However, the rollout looks very limited, and Anthropic has not announced Claude Money or published any official details. Nobody outside the company knows which banks it will support or how the link will work.
Live Access Instead of Manual Uploads
The biggest change involves how Claude gets your financial data. Right now, you have to export bank statements and upload them to get AI help with a budget. Claude Money would swap that step for an ongoing link, so Claude could check new transactions on demand.
That could make it much faster to spot repeat payments or check balances across accounts. At the same time, it gives an AI service nonstop access to some of your most private data. So far, the Money tab has only shown up in the mobile app, not on the web.
How Claude Money Compares With ChatGPT Finances
OpenAI already offers a similar tool called Finances inside ChatGPT. It connects bank accounts, credit cards, brokerage accounts, and other financial services through Plaid, a third-party data aggregator. Once you link your accounts, ChatGPT can answer questions about bills, subscriptions, savings, net worth, and investments.
OpenAI says it does not train its AI models on this personal financial data. The company also supports over 12,000 US banks and financial firms, so its focus is clearly American. Claude Money could follow a similar path, but Anthropic has not named a data partner or a launch region yet.
The Privacy Questions Behind Claude Money
Linking a bank account to any app opens a new path to your money data. An aggregator often sits between your bank and the app, and it stores access tokens that keep the connection alive. If attackers break into the app account, they can see your finances without touching your bank login.
What Could Go Wrong
A hijacked Claude account with Claude Money turned on would expose spending habits, balances, and recurring payments. Criminals can use those details to write believable phishing emails that mention real purchases and real shops. They can also time their scams around paydays or large purchases, which makes fraud much harder to spot.
Data retention is another open question, and it matters just as much as account security. Users will want to know how long Anthropic keeps transaction data, who can see it, and how to delete it. Until the company publishes clear policies for Claude Money, those answers remain unknown.
Will Claude Money Reach Europe?
Europe could prove a harder market for this kind of product, mainly because of its privacy laws. The EU’s data protection law, the GDPR, sets strict rules on how firms collect and use personal data. Bank records fall squarely under that law. Some observers expect Claude Money to stay US-only for a while, but Anthropic has not shared its plans.
How to Protect Yourself Before Linking Accounts
If you plan to try Claude Money once it launches, start by securing the account that will hold the connection. Turn on two-factor authentication for your Claude login, and use a strong, unique password saved in a password manager. Also review which third-party apps already have access to your bank, and remove any you no longer use.
Your network needs the same care, since a weak link can expose even a well-guarded account. Avoid linking or checking bank accounts on public Wi-Fi, because attackers can snoop on poorly secured hotspots. A trusted VPN encrypts your traffic on those networks, so your sessions stay private even when the hotspot is not.
Finally, think about linking one everyday account first instead of connecting every card and brokerage account you own. This limits the damage if something goes wrong with the service or your login. You can always add more accounts later, once you understand how Claude Money handles your data.
Final Thoughts
Anthropic’s move into personal finance puts it head to head with OpenAI for a role in how people manage money. The appeal is real, since asking an AI about your spending beats scrolling through months of statements. Still, a live link to your bank data turns your AI account into a high-value target for criminals. Before you connect anything to Claude Money, secure your account and wait for clear answers on how Anthropic handles your data.
